What We Can Learn from the Naked-Mole Rat’s Longevity

*This is a summary of the findings from various studies and articles. Further information and details on this study are located in the links below.*

Naked mole rats are fascinating.

The naked mole-rat lives 30-40 years and is fertile up until they die  The life span of a lab mouse is three years (Strength and fertility diminish with age), A naked mole-rat living 30-40 years is equivalent to a human living about 800 years!

A new study used mass spectrometrics to analyze circulating metabolites in both species at different ages. That means that they were measuring compounds that make up the main functions of each species to find differences in compounds linked to better health and antiaging.

The most intriguing metabolites were those that had previously been linked to pro-health and antiaging effects in mice that were significantly increased in the long-lived rodent compared to its short-lived counterpart (lab mice).

Scientists discovered that there were a handful of compound patterns that supported health and antiaging (N8-acetylspermidine and N1, N8-diacetylspermidine) and were more abundant in naked mole rats than in mice. Additionally, the age-associated decline in spermidine and N1- acetylspermidine levels observed in mice did not occur or is even reversed (in the case of N1-acetylspermidine) in naked mole-rats.

This research suggests that spermidine, in addition to other compounds, could play a role in the naked-mole rat’s longevity.  You can find the extensive study here.
